THE WATER PIPE:
Called "Nargileb" (Nargelh - coconut) by the Persians and "Schiscbeb" (bottle) by the Turks, was in all probability invented in India. It is also sometimes called "Kalian" (from ghalian-boiling) because of the soft, simmering sound produced by the smoke passing through the water bowl. A particular kind of tobacco called "Toombak" is used in the water pipe. The Orientals are also fond of adding some sandalwood, aloe, rose leaves, hashish or opium to the tobacco in these pipes.

the story is told Sultan Mahmud II (1808-1839) once gave Pasha Ferik a water pipe with such a long stem that slave girls bad to be included in the gift to act as bearees.
